The iconic Volkswagen Beetle is perhaps the most recognizable vehicle in the world. With over 20 million “Type 1” Beetles manufactured from 1938 to 2003, it’s no wonder the Beetle has often shown up in movies, TV shows, and other forms of pop culture.

While the latest incarnation of the Beetle can be seen at Jack Daniels Volkswagen in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, let’s a take a look at two of the world’s most famous Bugs.

Herbie, The Love Bug

Herbie made his first appearance in the 1968 Disney film The Love Bug as a pearl white 1963 Beetle with a loveable personality,

In the movie, Herbie and his owner, race car driver Dean Jones, win a rally race through the Sierra Nevada mountains. The movie ends with Herbie accompanying Dean and his new wife on their honeymoon.

The movie spawned three sequels and gained a new generation of fans when Herbie: Fully Loaded premiered in 2005.

In it, Lindsay Lohan stars as aspiring race car drive Maggie Peyton, who received Herbie has a graduation present and finds a note in the glove box reading “Please take care of Herbie. Whatever your problem, he’ll help you find the answer”. Herbie and Maggie win a race against a slew of professional drivers, including NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart.

Bumblebee

The Transformers made their debut in 1984, with Bumblebee as one of the most popular characters. Through a toy line, animated TV show, comic book, and later movie, the series followed the adventures of the Autobots, a sentient race of aliens with the ability to “transform” into machines. Bumblebee transformed into a yellow and black VW Beetle and was the first Autobot to befriend human Spike Witwicky.

Bumblebee’s small size makes him an ideal spy, and he has the ability to go where his larger counterparts cannot. He is known as one of the bravest and friendliest Autobots. Just like his real-life VW Beetle counterpart, Bumblebee is extremely energy efficient, able to keep going even when others have left the mission.
